Ibon-Ebon — “birds and eggs” — is Candaba, Pampanga’s festival, and it points to the town’s greatest natural treasure: the Candaba Swamp. This vast wetland is one of the Philippines’ most important bird sanctuaries, a resting and feeding stop for migratory birds on the East Asian flyway during the dry season.

The photographs here are from the February 2010 celebration, when street dancers in bird-inspired costumes and egg motifs filled Candaba’s streets at the height of the migratory season. Come for the festival, then stay for the swamp at dawn, when the birds are most active.
