Every January 9, Quiapo in Manila hosts one of the largest Catholic processions in the world: the Feast of the Black Nazarene. Barefoot devotees in maroon and yellow pack the streets around Quiapo Church for the Traslacion, hoping to touch or pull the rope of the andas carrying the dark wooden image of Christ, which devotees believe to be miraculous.

The image, carved from dark wood and brought from Mexico in the early 1600s, is enshrined in the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene. The photographs in this post are from the January 2010 feast — a sea of towels, raised hands, and devotion moving at a crawl through Quiapo.
