The MassKara Festival is the famous festival of Bacolod City, Negros Occidental, celebrated every October. Its name combines “mass”, for many, and “kara”, for face – a festival of many faces, which fits Bacolod’s nickname, the City of Smiles.
MassKara is known for its street dancing, where dancers in colourful smiling masks and elaborate costumes perform through the streets of Bacolod. The festival began as a celebration of resilience and good cheer, and it remains one of the best-known festivals in the Philippines.
The photographs in this post are from the MassKara Festival 2013 in Bacolod City, taken during that year’s October celebrations.
