The Kneeling Carabao Festival is the unique highlight of Pulilan, Bulacan’s town fiesta, held every May 14 to 15 in honor of San Isidro Labrador, the patron saint of farmers. During the festival, decorated carabaos — the farmers’ partners in the rice fields — are paraded through the town and, in front of the San Isidro Labrador Parish Church, the animals kneel down as if in prayer, a gesture of thanksgiving for a bountiful harvest that takes months of patient training. Street dancing, floats, and farm produce displays complete the celebration. These photos were taken during the Kneeling Carabao Festival in May 2014.
