The MassKara Festival is Bacolod City’s world-famous festival of smiles, held every October since 1980. Born during a time of crisis in the sugar industry, the festival answered hard times with smiling masks — “mass” meaning many and “kara” meaning face — and it has grown into one of the biggest festivals in the Philippines. The 2012 edition filled Bacolod’s streets with street-dancing competitions in glittering smiling costumes, drumbeaters, food stalls, and the electric night parties the city is known for. These photos are from the MassKara Festival in October 2012 in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental.
