The Feast of the Black Nazarene is one of the largest Catholic devotions in the Philippines, celebrated every January in Quiapo, Manila. Its centerpiece is the Traslacion, the solemn procession of the revered image of the Black Nazarene through the streets, drawing huge crowds of devotees who join the procession or line the route in prayer.

For many devotees, taking part in the feast is an expression of faith and thanksgiving, and the sea of people has become one of the most recognizable scenes of Filipino religious life. The photos in this post are from the 2013 celebration in Manila, taken during that year’s feast.
