The Daraga Church, formally the Our Lady of the Gate Parish Church, stands on a hill in Daraga, Albay, overlooking the town and the perfect cone of Mayon Volcano. Built by Franciscan missionaries in 1773 from volcanic rock, the church is known for its richly carved Baroque facade, decorated with religious images, floral motifs, and rare medallions. It became the parish church of Cagsawa’s survivors after the 1814 Mayon eruption buried the Cagsawa Church and drove the townspeople to Daraga. Today it is one of Albay’s most photographed landmarks and a National Cultural Treasure. These photos are from a 2013 visit to Daraga Church.
