Maleldo is the Kapampangan observance of Holy Week, and in the City of San Fernando, Pampanga, it is best known for the Good Friday Lenten rites in barangays such as San Pedro Cutud and Santa Lucia. Devotees take part in processions, self-flagellation, and the reenactment of the Crucifixion as acts of penance and devotion that have been practiced in the area for generations.
These rites draw large crowds of devotees, observers, and photographers every Holy Week, and they remain a significant, solemn part of Kapampangan religious culture in San Fernando. The events are graphic and are undertaken by participants as personal vows.
The photos and slideshow on this page are from Maleldo 2014 in the City of San Fernando, covering the San Pedro and Santa Lucia crucifixion rites.
