The City of San Fernando, Pampanga — the Christmas Capital of the Philippines — staged the Giant Lantern Festival (Ligligan Parul) 2015 on December 19, 2015 at Robinsons Starmills. Eleven barangays competed with giant lanterns about 20 feet in diameter, each one a moving kaleidoscope of thousands of bulbs controlled by hand-built rotors that sync the lights to music. The giant parul tradition, which began as a religious procession in the early 1900s, has grown into the country’s most spectacular Christmas event, drawing huge crowds to San Fernando every December.
