This year’s Traslacion, the religious procession honoring the revered Black Nazarene image, made headlines for its record-breaking 15-hour duration – the fastest in its storied history.

The Unprecedented Turn of Events

 

Amidst the sea of devotees, a dramatic moment unfolded at the intersection of Arlegui Street and Quezon Boulevard in Quiapo. One of the two 50-meter ropes, essential for pulling the andas (carriage) carrying the Black Nazarene, unexpectedly snapped. This incident added an unexpected twist to the day, underscoring the devotion and determination of the faithful who rallied to ensure the procession’s continuation.

Challenges Amidst Devotion

The Black Nazarene, encapsulated in layers of protective glass within the andas, embarked on its sacred journey. Intended to safeguard the sacred icon, the glass enclosure faced an unforeseen challenge as humid and rainy weather clouded its surface. This added an element of shared adversity, as the faithful navigated through the procession with obscured views of the cherished image.

This year’s Traslacion held particular significance as it marked the resumption of the procession after a pause in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
