I recently had the privilege of attending the vibrant Aliwan Fiesta 2024 hosted by the Manila Broadcasting Company. The atmosphere crackled with energy as diverse cultural groups from across the Philippines converged to showcase their heritage through dance, music, and stunning costumes.
A Feast for the Senses
The grand parade was a visual spectacle. Adorned in elaborate attire, participants weaved their way from Star City to a full-fledged presentation in front of the Aliw Theater. Each contingent brought their festival’s story to life, creating a tapestry of vibrant colors, rhythmic beats, and infectious enthusiasm.
Capturing the Highlights
I was in my element. From the intricate details of the festival floats (with “Guinakit” from Cotabato City taking home the top prize this year) to the captivating expressions on the dancers’ faces, countless moments were begging to be captured.
Crowning a New Queen
The excitement continued with the much-anticipated awarding ceremony. The crowd cheered as Mia Loureen Tamayo of Cebu Province was crowned the new Reyna ng Aliwan! The runners-up and special awardees, like Juliana Louise Martinez, the Netizens’ Choice, and Ameera Almamari, the Best in Festival Costume winner, each added their unique charm to the evening.
Dinagyang Reigns Supreme
But the undisputed highlight was the announcement of the street dance competition winners. The energy was electric as each group received recognition for their artistry. “Panagbenga Flower Festival” from Baguio City bagged the “Pride of Place” award, while the “Tultugan Festival” from Iloilo received the “Best in Music Accompaniment” accolade. Iloilo’s “Dinagyang Festival,” however, stole the show, securing not only the “Best in Costume” award but also clinching the coveted title of Street Dance Competition Champion for the second year in a row.
A Celebration of Culture
Aliwan Fiesta 2024 was a resounding success. It served as a beautiful reminder of the rich cultural tapestry that binds the Philippines together. As the celebration ends, I’m filled with a renewed appreciation for the artistry, dedication, and sheer joy that these festivals embody.
