The Kuraldal is one of Pampanga’s oldest dance devotions. In this tradition, devotees dance through the streets for hours — swaying, hopping, and singing in prayer — believing that the dancing itself brings healing, thanksgiving, and blessings. The most famous Kuraldal is held in Sasmuan, Pampanga, in honor of Santa Lucia (St. Lucy), where thousands of devotees, many of them women praying for children or healing, join the fluvial and street processions every January. Similar Kuraldal devotions are kept by Kapampangan parishes in honor of their own patrons. These photos are from a Kuraldal celebration in 2013.
