The Giant Lantern Festival (Ligligan Parul) lit up Robinsons Starmills in the City of San Fernando, Pampanga, on December 17, 2016. Barangays of the city competed with giant lanterns around 20 feet across, each running thousands of colored bulbs through a hand-built rotor that makes the lights dance in patterns to music — the craft that made San Fernando the Christmas Capital of the Philippines. Tens of thousands of spectators watched the kaleidoscopic showdown, and the lanterns stayed on exhibition at the venue through the holidays. These photos are from the Giant Lantern Festival 2016 competition night.
